Florida SB 1194 (2026), sponsored by Senator Jones, amends three sections of Florida Statutes to govern artificial intelligence in K-12 education. Under Section 1 (amending s. 1001.03), the State Board of Education must adopt statewide standards and policies for school and student AI use. Those policies must: limit student AI use to teacher-expressly-permitted applications; require students to disclose how AI was used in their work; and mandate AI-monitoring safeguards and proctored assessments for the Florida Virtual School. The board must also direct the Department of Education to collect metrics on student AI use in academics, teacher-reported academic dishonesty, statewide reading/writing/math assessment performance, and Florida Virtual School graduation readiness; provide teacher training on AI use, AI detection tools, and responsible-use strategies; and review school district compliance with AI policies. Under Section 2 (amending s. 1003.42), students in grades 6 through 12 must receive instruction on digital literacy and the ethics of using AI in English Language Arts and technology courses, added alongside existing social media awareness requirements. The Department of Education must make this instructional material available online and districts must notify parents of its availability. Under Section 3 (amending s. 1006.07), district school boards must include AI-use policies consistent with s. 1001.03(20) in their codes of student conduct. The act takes effect July 1, 2026.
