USE OF AI BY STATE GOVERNMENT
Illinois SB2117, introduced February 7, 2025 by Sen. Sally J. Turner, amends Section 1-80 of the Department of Innovation and Technology Act (20 ILCS 1370/1-80) to expand the duties and membership of the existing Generative AI and Natural Language Processing Task Force. The bill adds three new responsibilities to the Task Force: (1) recommending policies and procedures for the procurement, deployment, and use of generative AI systems by State agencies; (2) recommending policies and procedures for uses of generative AI by State agencies that should be prohibited; and (3) assessing the impact of generative AI use by State agencies on the delivery of State services. The bill also adds the Chief Procurement Officer for General Services as a new Task Force member. Additionally, it requires the Task Force to file an addendum to its original report by December 31, 2026, covering the same topics including the newly added responsibilities. The bill takes effect immediately upon becoming law.
