MS Artifical Intelligence and Stem Eduaction Act; create.
Mississippi House Bill 1605, the Mississippi Artificial Intelligence and STEM Education Innovation Act, authorizes the Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) to establish a voluntary AI and STEM Education Pilot Program for grades 6 through 12 in public schools. Under Section 4, the program prioritizes underperforming schools, rural districts, and schools serving economically disadvantaged students. Section 5 permits AI-assisted tools for personalized tutoring, diagnostic assessments, teacher planning support, virtual labs, and career pathway guidance. Section 6 requires MDE to provide or approve professional development for educators and explicitly prohibits using AI tools for teacher evaluation or employment decisions. Section 7 mandates compliance with FERPA and applicable Mississippi student data privacy laws, prohibits selling or sharing student data for non-educational purposes, and directs MDE to develop guidelines on algorithmic bias, AI transparency, and human oversight. Section 8 allows MDE to partner with the Mississippi Development Authority and higher education institutions to align STEM instruction with workforce needs and promote internships, apprenticeships, and high-demand career pathways. Section 9 requires MDE to report annually to the Legislature by December 1 on student outcomes, teacher feedback, cost effectiveness, and expansion recommendations, with the pilot program sunsetting on June 30, 2030, unless reauthorized. Section 10 authorizes MDE to promulgate rules to implement the act.
