Interim study to examine the current status of artificial intelligence legislation occurring at the state and federal levels to address risks to public safety and to determine what action Nebraska should take to address such risks
Nebraska LR421 (2026) is a legislative resolution, not a statute. It has not been enacted and is in committee, referred to the Banking, Commerce and Insurance Committee. If adopted, it would designate that committee to conduct an interim study. The study would examine the current status of state and federal artificial intelligence legislation aimed at risks to public safety and children. It would also help determine what action Nebraska should take. The resolution refers to LB1083, introduced in the same session. LB1083 would have adopted the Transparency in Artificial Intelligence Risk Management Act. That act had child safety and public safety provisions covering widely used chatbots and the most advanced AI systems. It would have required select companies to publish how they test for and protect against severe risks to children and the public. It would also have required them to self-report to the Nebraska Attorney General if an advanced AI system acts in certain dangerous ways and harms a child or causes a public safety incident. The Attorney General would have had enforcement authority. Under the resolution's numbered paragraph 2, the committee would report its findings and recommendations to the Legislative Council or Legislature when the study concludes.
