New Jersey Assembly Bill 4729 (introduced March 10, 2026) has not been enacted. It is currently in the Assembly Appropriations Committee after referral from the Science, Innovation and Technology Committee and the State and Local Government Committee. If enacted, it would add a new section to Title 19 of the Revised Statutes. It would require any AI chatbot that uses generative AI to create audio, video, text, or print content to give voters election related information, or information about a candidate's accomplishments, policy positions, or qualifications, to show a clear and conspicuous disclosure before providing the content. The disclosure must say the content comes from a generative AI system. It must be permanent or not easily removed by later users, to the extent technically feasible (section 1.b). The bill defines "artificial intelligence chatbot," "candidate," "election related information," and "generative artificial intelligence" (section 1.a). "Election related information" covers anything affecting a voter's ability to participate or concerning election outcomes. Examples include election dates, voter eligibility, registration, mail-in ballots, ballot cure, polling places and hours, canvassing, and certification of results. If the disclosure is missing, the person or entity responsible for overseeing the chatbot would face a penalty of up to $6,000 for a first offense and up to $12,000 for each later offense, in addition to any other penalty provided by law (section 1.c). The act would take effect 30 days after enactment (section 2).
